So, some of you might not know it was Flag Day today. I had no idea what flag day was until Collin joined the National Guard and we were both immersed into the military. In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14 and commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day.
We didn't do really anything to celebrate cuz we kinda forgot (I would've liked to have some flag-themed night) but just talked about when Collin joined the National Guard back in October of 2007 while we were engaged. He will be coming up on his third year in the Guard this coming November which is kinda exciting because it puts us half way into our contract. Right now Collin is enrolled in a college first program allowing him two years of schooling without a possibility of deployment aslong he gets good grades, which puts us a little bit at ease because theres been a lot of word that there is a good chance of a possible deployment coming up within the next year, but you never can know. After Collin hits his third year mark, he has the option to just stay enlisted for the remainder of his contract or enroll and sign another 8 yr contract with the ROTC up at school allowing him to become become an Officer, which would give him higher rankings. There are a lot of pros but does has it cons. Enrolling in the ROTC (which is a different class than enlisted) would make Collin an Officer, allowing him to rank up higher among other things but deployments become a higher possibility. The good thing though is that we don't have to make a decision until November next year. Since Collin joined the National Guard, its been a roller coaster. We have definitely learned to roll with the punches! It has been a both a real blessing and a trial, but I am so proud of Collin and his decision to join the National Guard. Though we have been apart for 6 months of our first year of marriage, it definitely has strengthened us, together and as individuals. He is an awesome soldier and has achieved a lot and I am so incredibly blessed to be married to one! Not to mention, he looks SMOKIN in his uniform!

Hey Hilary! A family we knew in NC (their kids used to babysit for us) was in the reserves, well the husband was anyway. He joined to help him pay for school. He's a P.A. Anyway, they have like 7 kids and he has been deployed 2 times just while we were in NC over 4 1/2 years. Thankfully he was a med in the military but he was in Iraq for a straight 2 years and he was about 50 years old! It was really hard on their family and especially his wife! Anyway, I just thought I'd share. I'm sure you'll have lots of prayers until you guys make that decision.
Yeah. And it's my birthday, which Collin totally did NOT remember. Not that I'm griping--considering I think I only sent him a FB message for his!
On another note, I enjoy flipping through your blog, Hilary.
