A few months ago I went to the cheap theater with a girlfriend and saw this lovely piece, Jane Eyre. I had heard of the story but was not familiar with it at all and thought it was another novel by Jane Austen. I remember watching it thinking "this is kinda dark for Jane Austen" and then it was revealed to me that is was Charlotte Bronte that wrote it. I'm glad this was the first version that I saw. A couple weeks ago I went to the library and picked up the book and realized that the movie is a bit more dark then I percieved the book to be which I think beautifully added some intensity to it. Heres one of my favorite lines. Its in the movie but I couldnt find a clip that contains all of it on youtube...
"My bride is here," he said, again drawing me to him, "because my equal is here, and my likeness. Jane, will you marry me?"
Still I did not answer, and still I writhed myself from his grasp: for I was still incredulous.
"Are you mocking me?"
"Do you doubt me, Jane?"
"Entirely!"
"Do you doubt me, Jane?"
"Entirely!"
You--you strange, you rare almost unearthly thing! --I love as my own flesh. You--poor and obscure, and small and plain as you are--I entreat to accept me as a husband."
"What, me!" I ejaculated, beginning in his earnestness--and especially in his incivility--to credit his sincerity: "me who have not a friend in the world but you- if you are my friend:not a shilling but what you have given me?"
"You, Jane, I must have you for my own--entirely my own, Will you be mine? Say yes, quickly.
Swoon! What if men talked to women like this? What if your husband walked in, pulled you close and said "you rare, unearthly thing! I must have you for my own" ? Maybe that's not your thing, but I think my clothes would spontanously fall off.
I love this scene... talk about tension. There's something about his tone when he repeats "cold" back to her. As though he's saying "what? Is being around me like this not enough to keep you warm?"
heres another good one...
"You transfix me quite" Ah, I love this movie... it makes me all melty and swoony (especially for Mr. Rochester)
So I invited some girls over from our ward and we watched it together. We all piled into the living room with blankets, pillows and treats and enjoyed this wonderful classic.

Hil, I love this post!! You are so funny! I just watched it the other night and it made my heart flutter! And I totally agree... if Nate came home and started talking to me that way, my clothes would probably spontaneously fall off, too!!
